The village of Gaiole in Chianti is surrounded by densely cultivated hills (vineyards) and with a luxuriant vegetation. In the Middle Ages, all the Chiantigiana area was covered by numerous fortifications, feuds of the several local lordships.
Today we can see some examples of these ancient fortifications: In the outskirts, noteworthy is the Castle of Brolio. Built in the Middle Ages, the castle was transformed and equipped with bastions and towers; subsequently it belonged to the Ricasoli family that transformed it in a mansion with an Italian garden characterized by tree-lined avenues and with a romantic park where it is possible to admire many botanical species.
The city of Gaiole in Chianti offers, beyond to an uncontaminated and surrounded by green hills landscape, the possibility to visit a lot of ancient churches, among which we remember the Pieve di San Marcellino, the Pieve di Santa Maria in the locality of Spaltenna and the Oratorio of the Pianigiani.
